Interesting selection here. I’ll be working my way through this. My tastes go more toward the symphonic side of the rock genre (Xandria) and I still have a lot of my old clients on my workout playlist. Rammstein, KMFDM, Combichrist. I always am open to new groups though. Glad to get this list.

I find most female singers in symph rock/metal irritating but individual songs can be incredibly good, especially live videos. A dash of theatre is welcomed in a male-led band such as Kamelot, and I loved the one-off Dracula album, 'Swing Of Death'. When I DJed, there was a goth crowd that was into KMFDM and kind, and then they would go to a techno club afterwards, so both genres were too close for my liking. Rammstein is great, and their videos amazing, but there's something to be said for old school like Sisters of Mercy. I made an effort for this list but, overall, I don't get much time for music anymore. Politics takes up space.

Yeah my daughter agrees with you on the irritating part. None of that when we travel together. It’s Dimmu Borgia, Amon Amarth, etc

They have good songs but full albums are a lot to absorb though Dimmu Borgir's 'Eonian' was their most accessible. I can still enjoy their ancient cover of Twisted Sister - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d78d-yeUcd4

ANIMALS AS LEADERS Arithmophobia

IHSAHN On The Shores

CONVERGE & CHELSEA WOLFE Blood Moon

MASTODON The Czar

PRIMORDIAL Death Of The Gods

PARADISE LOST Darker Thoughts

MACHINE HEAD Sail into the Black

GOJIRA Another World

DRACULA Walking on Water

MEKONG DELTA A Colony of Liar Men

WITHERFALL End of Time

I'm overloading you, but driven by my distraction after our chat, and these examples of pop influenced girl and women:

Bring it on. I love talking about this stuff. I need to get away from politics anyway.

Funny you should go in this direction though. I play with a group of musicians. We get together once in a while to jam. There are quite a few of us so we'll play different events or now we're playing at various senior centers, retirement homes, etc. doing Christmas related programs. My 12 year old granddaughter is also involved with an organization called Elevate which is a School of Rock type setup. She sings but I'm helping her learn guitar as well. I also work with her various groups to help them develop songs for their programs.

I am familiar with Spiriitbox although I hadn't seen that video. Arch enemy has been one of my favorite groups for quite a while. I played Guitar Hero with Michael Amott in Japan some years ago. He was better than me at that too. Angela was fronting the band then. I was apprehensive when she had to retire but Alissa has taken the torch nicely.

Love this conversation. You bring back all the old memories. You're extremely well versed .

I'll leave you with a couple vids. You may have seen this but I still enjoy it. Like the song a lot.

My fixated with the Japanese scene so I've had to learn about that. Japan meets metal

This last one I threw in. I saw them years go and just thought they were quirky. Plus I like the song.

'Painkiller' is in my top 10 metal tracks and #1 for being so heavy yet popular when it came out. Babymetal, however, is a mixed bag. Sure, they're cute and sexy but when they started that angle's challenging as they were so young - the Japanese fuck-me-sell me way. Now as women, sex is great but my compliment is more for their hard work and theater ('cause that's what it is) but I'm no fan of the music. Halford gets extra cred for guesting with young artistsS

Rocknmob, hadn;t seen that one, thanks. Think the last time I watched was 'them' in Sochi.

Scary Bitches are fun, the type of band it would've been great to watch in The Winston Pub, a long-running music bar in the seedier side of Durban, a place I hosted rock and metal bands, and where the punks hated me. Loved that place!

Most of all, charity is great, so kudos to making people happier! And love that you've indoctrinated your daughter AND granddaughter to the better world :)

I thought BabyMetal was a gimmick when I first saw them. The band was no joke though. I started getting exposed to that whole Japanese/KPop scene by my granddaughter and her anime loving friends. I figure it’s only fair for some give and take in the music exposure game. I figured if she thinks she wants to be a rock star I can guide her path. I’ve seen “the way”, good and bad.

All you can do is give her the tools and encouragement towards a future with options. If every adult did that, our world would improve in a generation.

Giving her solid options is my fervent goal. My preference is for her not to pursue the entertainment path but I know the sirens song is loud. I’ve been out awhile and I still miss it.

I've known many musicians, and managed a few bands. Most don't sing or play anymore. Talent wasn't a factor, just cold-hearted industry flooded by Made in the USA products they couldn't compete against. Plus the added cultural factor of apartheid's end introducing gospel and kwaito (the worst music genre).

Yeah, I was in “the business “ for 25 years. I finally left because I knew I would lose everything if I didn’t. Made a lot of money but almost lost my soul, not to mention my family. There were a lot of changes during that time. Most bands were in it for the music but had no business sense at all which is why a lot of them still tour wherever possible. I’ll give you another story. In 2018 I went to France for Hellfest as a fan. I ran into Slash who was there with his band and, not G&R with whom I did a couple long tours. He asked me how much I was making when I worked for them. Turned out it was more than the allowance he was getting at the time.

Interesting anecdote!

Another problem was artists wanting fame more than they loved the music, and exaggerated uselessness in face of real world challenges. Also, some young artists were difficult, brought up spoilt, unable to work logically. It was a very frustrating experience for me.

Music was a cause so I never had money, and the emotions and betrayals became too hefty a price.
