Yes, I wondered as much when I started reading about the wife and excited kids!
For sure--him trying to conceal his "shock and distaste" and his feeling of "horror" were what made it so brutal and uncomfortable
Nothing more brutal than the truth about marriage.
She says I do, then forever after, she doesn't ....
That works both ways.
It's destructive staying married whilst wishing you weren't.
